Crisis Mode: Verified Safety Information on X
Design a flow that surfaces trusted information during emergencies.
Background

During natural disasters, public emergencies, or citywide disruptions, X is often one of the first platforms people check for updates. Unfortunately, this also makes it a hub for misinformation and unverified claims, which can mislead users and delay access to critical resources.

Context

X wants to introduce a “Crisis Mode” feature that activates during verified emergency events. In this mode, users should see trusted information from verified authorities (e.g., local government, NGOs, emergency services) highlighted in their feed, while misleading or irrelevant content is de-emphasized.

Business Objective

Increase trust in X during emergencies, reduce misinformation spread, and ensure people can quickly access reliable, actionable updates.

Target User
  • Everyday users seeking reliable updates during a crisis.

  • People located in or near an affected area.

  • Concerned friends/family searching for accurate info about ongoing events.

Core Problem

How can X help users quickly find and trust verified emergency information without overwhelming them with noise, while keeping the experience simple and accessible?

Challenge

Design the UI flow and experience that:

  1. Alerts users when “Crisis Mode” has been activated in their region.

  2. Surfaces critical, verified information (alerts, safety tips, resources).

  3. Allows users to filter between “verified updates” and “community chatter.”

  4. Ensures misinformation is minimized without hiding open conversation.

Constraints
  • Must clearly differentiate verified crisis updates from regular tweets.

  • Design should not feel alarmist, but should signal urgency and credibility.

  • Must work on both mobile and web contexts.

  • Should remain inclusive and accessible, even for users with limited literacy or poor connectivity.
