Strava Racket Sports Mode: Padel, Badminton, and Tennis with Wearable Integration
Design a new activity mode for racket sports that integrates with wearables.
Background

Strava is widely used for running, cycling, and other endurance sports, but racket sports like padel, badminton, and tennis are growing rapidly worldwide. Currently, these athletes don’t have a dedicated way to track their performance in Strava. With the rise of smart wearables (e.g., Apple Watch, Garmin, Whoop), there’s an opportunity to capture detailed in-game metrics beyond just duration and calories.

Context

Adding a Racket Sports Mode would allow users to track rallies, swings, intensity, and movement patterns. Integrating with wearables enables richer insights: heart rate zones, movement bursts, and even shot detection (where supported). This makes Strava more relevant to a broader athletic community.

Business Objective
  • Attract new users from fast-growing racket sports communities.

  • Expand Strava’s presence beyond endurance sports into court-based, high-intensity activities.

  • Strengthen Strava’s ecosystem by leveraging wearable integrations for richer, unique data insights.

Target User
  • Amateur and semi-competitive padel, badminton, and tennis players.

  • Fitness enthusiasts who already use wearables for health tracking.

  • Strava users who want more variety in their activity log, not just running/cycling.

Core Problem

How can Strava introduce a dedicated racket sports activity mode that feels natural in the app and makes the most of wearable integration — without overwhelming users with complex metrics?

Challenge

Design the end-to-end flow and UI for:

  1. Starting a racket sports session (choosing between padel, badminton, or tennis).

  2. Connecting with a wearable device to capture advanced metrics.

  3. Viewing real-time session insights (duration, HR, rallies, movement bursts).

  4. Reviewing a post-match summary (performance stats, progress, achievements).

Constraints
  • Must support quick session start — athletes often have limited warm-up time.

  • Keep metrics digestible (e.g., rallies won, intensity bursts) rather than overly technical.

  • Maintain Strava’s familiar visual style for activity summaries.

  • Consider offline mode for courts without strong connectivity.
